Kids can learn how to play the guitar, make puppets, discover art from around the world and much more throughout spring break during various art classes.

Spring Break Art Camps at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre run from March 18 to 28 and are open to kids aged five to 15. They are filled with all kinds of activities that include everything from arts and crafts to performance, music, and dance.

“Exposure to making art addresses the need for creativity in our lives – allowing children to be who they are, and to use that knowledge to create any kind of art is so crucial to the human experience,” said Trischa Buhler, education programs manager.

With 30 classes to choose from, kids will not only have the chance to try new things, but to also explore and learn more about the activities that already interest them.

“Fine motor skills get further refined when a child holds a new art tool, language development happens when they are taught new art terminology, and creating art enhances their visual-spatial skills. In an art camp setting, children are allowed the freedom to express themselves, be creative, take risks, discover new passions, and develop new ideas.”

Exploring the incredibly popular style of anime teaches kids how to draw their own characters, All About Uke and Guitar Heroes offer an opportunity to pick up an instrument and learn the basics, while Passport to Art shows children how artists around the world express themselves in their cultures.

Kids can also learn how to craft their own stories in Start Your Story, where they will learn the basics of creating a story readers can’t put down. Packed with even more opportunities, this fun selection of art classes will excite and inspire creativity.

Open to kids aged eight to 15 are the Dungeons and Dragons camps that will take kids on a heroic adventure. The cultural centre’s experienced ‘dungeon master’ will start each session off with a little creativity, from character creation, miniature painting to costume and props. Each day will include two hours of game play, which will teach the players co-operation, storytelling, respect, and how to take those courageous steps needed to complete their campaign.

Week one runs from March 18 to 22 and week two is March 25 to 28. The classes are broken into age categories of five to seven, eight to 11, and 11 to 15. The Dungeons and Dragons classes are three hours long while all the other spring break classes are one hour and 10 minutes long. Prices vary for each class.
