The success of a blanket drive on Saturday proves Chilliwack really does care about its community.
A total of 455 large bags of blankets and warm clothing were collected as part of the Realtors Care Blanket Drive hosted by Chilliwack and District Real Estate Board on Nov. 21.
“It was a very successful event in our eyes considering the time we are in and having to make a huge change in how we collect the items,” organizer Steve Lerigny said.
That number is up from 250 bags in 2018 and 325 in 2017.

They were also collecting non-perishable items for the food bank which was also a successful initiative. The Salvation Army did three pick-ups of donated food that came in via the blanket drive.
Normally, folks would drop off donations at various real estate agency offices, or Realtors would go door-to-door collecting items. But this year’s event was a drive-through fundraiser outside Cottonwood Mall on Nov. 21.
There were even two elderly women, pushing walkers with blankets on top of them, who came up to make a donation. And some folks even donated hand-knitted items like hats and scarves.
“Thank you to our Realtor volunteers from our various offices as well as those generous people who came through the drive-thru to donate,” Lerigny said.
All items will be given to Ruth and Naomi’s Mission and Cyrus Centre for those in need.
There’s another drive-through fundraiser coming up organized by a local real estate agency. The Re/Max Nyda Realty Toy House takes place on Dec. 12 from 9 a.m. to noon. They will be collecting new, unwrapped gifts, gift cards and cash for Chilliwack children and teenagers in need.
