The Chilliwack Chiefs saw their three-game winning streak snapped Wednesday night.
The Langley Rivermen invaded Prospera Centre for a mid-week divisional showdown, edging the home team 4-3 in a sloppily entertaining game.
Neither side played particularly well, and defence seemed an afterthought for both teams.
The Rivermen drew first blood at 6:34 of period one on a snipe by Mitch McLean.
The Minnesota native wheeled out from behind the net, From the bottom of the left faceoff circle, with his back facing goaltender Josh Halpenny, McLean fired a sharp-angle backhand shot into the far top-right corner.
The Chiefs evened up on a Jacob Hand goal at 17:45.
The first-year forward netted his second of the season with a shot from the top of the left faceoff circle. Mathieu Tibbet helped immensely, going hard to the net to provide a crease-crashing distraction for Langley netminder Brock Crossthwaite.
But the Rivermen had the last laugh in period one, scoring with 44.5 ticks on the clock.
It was another that Halpenny would want back. The netminder overplayed McLain as he came down the right wing with a shot. The puck went off the endboards and out the other side to Nathan Craft. Halpenny couldn't get back in time to keep the Kitimat native from burying his eighth of the year into a wide open cage.
The first period ended on a scary note, with Chiefs forward getting crunched into the boards by a Langley defender.
The Texas native was helped off the ice putting zero weight on his left leg, but he was back for the second period, showing no ill effects.
Shots on goal through 20 minutes favoured Langley
The Rivermen almost went up 3-1 early in period two. Langley native Kevin Kilistoff had a breakaway from center ice in, but Halpenny took away the bottom half of the net, stretching post to post to keep the puck out.
The rest of the period was played in who-cares-about-defence style, with the teams trading odd-man rushes.
The only goal went to the Chiefs, with rookie D-man Carter Cochrane slapping his sixth of the year past Crossthwaite at 17:12. Gober drew the only assist.
Chilliwack started the third period with a pair of power play opportunities, coming up empty on both.
Seconds after getting back to five-on-five, Langley re-took the lead on a goal by James Robinson. A miscue between Shay Laurent and his defence partner led to a turnover. Jamie Vlanich and Will Cook drew the assists, quickly getting the puck to Robinson in the slot.
The Alberta native snapped it past Halpenny for his fourth of the year.
The Rivermen got the insurance marker at 16:43.
Jakob Reichert put a backhander on goal from the slot. The puck hit Halpenny's glove and dropped into the blue paint, where Matt Ustaski poked it home for his seventh.
That goal proved to be huge when Kurt Black scored at 17:30.
Halpenny made it to the bench for the extra attacker with 43 seconds remaining, but Langley locked it down, getting to the final whistle for the win.
Announced attendance was 1,258.
The three stars were Robinson (first), Hand (second) and Tony Bretzman (Langley, third).
The Fortis BC Energy Player of the Game was Gober.
The Chiefs are back at home Friday night, hosting the Merritt Centennials with a 7 p.m. start-time.
