Unity Christian wins battle of unbeatens

The Unity Christian senior boys basketball team knocked off Abbotsford's St. John Brebeuf Tuesday night.

The Unity Christian senior boys basketball team hosted Abbotsford's Saint John Brebeuf Bears on Tuesday, coming away with a 50-41 win.

Saint John Brebeuf came into the game unbeaten at 3-0, and jumped out to an early 17-12 lead off some hot shooting from Chilliwack resident Curtis McDonald. The Bears did their best to take away UC's strength, strategically doubling Unity's big players in the post. The Flames were left with plenty of open looks from the outside, but they didn't find their shooting touch until just before halftime.

A 12-0 run before the break, including three pointers by Nathan Vugteveen and Clay Driesen, put UC up for good.

Vugteveen ended with a game-high 18 points as the Flames improved to 2-0 in league play. UC is now ranked fifth in the lastest provincial single A list.

The boys face Langley Christian Thursday night in the latest battle between the arch-rivals. The battle between the province's fifth and sixth ranked teams is also a battle for first place in the league.

— The Unity Christian girls also defeated St. John Brebeuf Tuesday, winning 58-31 behind 20 points from Mandy VanMuyen.

The UC girls are 1-2 in league play.
