Chilliwack’s U-15 Silver Strikers took on the Surrey Galaxy in the second meeting between the two clubs this year.Playing with 11 players and no reserves, the Strikers gutted out a 1-0 win.As in the previous game (a 2-0 win), the Strikers dominated field position and ball possession, but struggled to finish their attacks. The game’s only goal came three minutes into the second half. A lead pass from central-midfielder Emma Haagensen sent Kiana Thiessen through two defenders into the 18 yard box. She was taken down from behind and awarded a penalty kick. One of the most sure-footed shooters on the team, Haagensen didn’t miss, slamming a shot into the top corner. Just three minutes later another penalty kick was awarded on a Galaxy hand-ball. This time Haagensen’s shot grazed the outside of the goal post.Rhiannon Dunphy laid out four perfect corner kicks in this game, landing all of them in the goal mouth. Brett Karcioglu and Taylor Allan had the best chances, but Chilliwack was snake-bitten around the net.Outstanding defensive play by Kelli Whitehead, Sydney Richards and Elena Schroots kept the Galaxy attackers to the outside, and Chilliwack allowed only six shots on goal.
