Through two games at the CONCACAF Women’s Championship, Jordyn Huitema and her national soccer squad are dominating.
Huitema scored four goals in a 12-0 rout of Cuba Monday.
The game was played at H-E-B Park in Ediburg, Texas and Huitema played all 90 minutes in the win. After teammate Adriana Leon opened the scoring for Canada 11 minutes in, Huitema made it 2-0 at the 12 minute mark, going airborne and heading in a ball from the top of the penalty box.
The 17 year old struck again with goals in the 37th, 51st and 71st minutes as Canada improved to 2-0 in the eight team tournament.
“What we talked before this match was that no matter what we keep our standards high in respect to our opponents, fans that were watching, and the game,” said Canadian coach Kenneth Heiner-Moller. “I’m very pleased.”
His team opened last week with a 2-0 shutout of Jamaica.
The field also includes the United States, Trinidad and Tobago, Panama, Costa Rica and Mexico.
Huitema is tied with teammate Adriana Leon for the tournament goal-scoring lead.
She now has six career goals with the national team, in 13 appearances with three starts.
The top three teams in this tournament qualify for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France.
The fourth place team faces the third place team from the South American confederation.
Canada was due to play their final group stage game Thursday (after Progress press deadlines) versus Costa Rica.
A win would send Huitema’s crew on to a Sunday semi-final, and a win there would have them playing in the CONCACAF championship game next Wednesday.
