Hyacks hammer GW Graham Grizzlies in preseason clash

The AAA powerhouse dropped an injury riddled Grizzlies squad 51-19 at Exhibition Stadium.

The GW Graham Grizzlies took it on the chin in a preseason loss to the New Westminster Hyacks Friday, falling 51-19 to the AAA powerhouse at Exhibition Stadium.“They jumped on us early and didn’t look back,” said GWG head coach Adam Smith. “Their execution was top notch and their speed gave us trouble. Every mistake we made on D turned into a big play.”Ethan Mastin led the GWG defence with eight tackles.Quarterback Gabe Olivares was the offensive star, chucking two touchdown passes and running for another.“In my eight years of coaching varsity football I have never been on that end of a score, but the team never quit and stuck together,” Smith noted. “To leave that game and truly believe we still got lots out of it is huge. “We remain focused on getting one per cent better every day.” GWG wraps up its preseason slate Friday, hitting the road to face Notre Dame at Burnaby Lakes.They kick off the regular season Oct. 7 with a home game at Exhibition Stadium against the Robert Bateman Timberwolves.
