It has been a long time since Sardis secondary school has had a junior girls basketball team with a winning record.
This year’s Falcons have flown out of the gate, starting the season 4-1 in league play, and 9-2 overall.
That includes a second place finish at the annual Archbishop Carney Stars tournament in Port Coquitlam.
Most recently, a battle of Falcons saw Sardis beat Dasmesh Punjabi School (Abbotsford) 55-20.
Brynna Kearl was the top scorer in that one, draining 15 points. Danika Elias added seven points off the bench.
Sardis followed that with a 67-12 bombing of the Rick Hansen Hurricanes.
Nicole Reid was the top scorer, with 16 points.
Talia Ferris had 10 points.
Dana Bruni had eight.
Demi Weijgeman continues to lead the team in points-per-game average (9.5).
The long-distance sniper has drained 10 three point shots through the first 11 games.
“Our ability to push the ball up the court and score easy baskets is the key to our success,” said head coach Gina Graves. “I could not be any more proud of all 13 girls on the team. This year is going to be one of the most exciting and successful seasons for girls basketball at Sardis.”
Graves is helped by assistant coaches Sydnee Elderton and Amanda Tagle.
All three are alums of the Sardis basketball program.
The team hosts Abbotsford on Monday and faces Agassiz in exhibition action Tuesday.
