Deputan and Hockley secure curling provincial berths

Lisa Deputan won the C event at Lower Mainland playdowns and will curl in the 2014 Tim Hortons

Lisa Deputan had a rough time in the A and B events at last weekend's BC Senior Women's Lower Mainland curling playdown, but she finished on a high note.

Deputan earned one of two C event provincial qualifiers, and will

The Lower Mainland playdowns were held in Coquitlam, with Deputan joined by Jane Adams (lead), Laura Wigham (second) and Janet Klebe (third). Doug Marshall coached.

Deputan's crew suffered an early exit in the A event, losing their opener 7-6 to Joanne Kern (Tsawassen). She made it to the second round in the B event, beating Kathy Smiley (Royal City) 8-5 before falling 7-6 to Charlotte West (Coquitlam).

That relegated Deputan to the C event where she beat Delta's Lynda Roemer (6-4) and Richmond's Yadranka Thompson (9-4) to finally secure her spot.

Deputan's crew will be one of eight traveling to Courtenay Feb. 17-23 for the 2014 Tim Hortons Senior Curling Championships.

The winner of that event will head to Yellowknife for nationals, running March 20-30.

— Chilliwack's Dale Hockley will be in Courtney as well, competing on the men's side.

Hockley is curling third for Ken Watson, representing the Vancouver Curling Club. Their Lower Mainland playdown was held last weekend in White Rock.

They swept four games in the A event with wins over Delta's Alan Roemer (7-6), Langley/Cloverdale's Stu Harris (8-2), Delta's Victor Shimizu (9-3) and White Rock's Craig Lepine (6-3).

— Fraser Valley high school playdowns were held last week, and for a second straight year Chilliwack secondary school will send a team to provincials. Kirsten Zucchet, Cailin Cooke, Everly Royea and Jani Jasmine went 3-0, and will try to avenge last year's heartbreaking finals appearance, when they were forced to settle for silver.

Sardis secondary school had a senior boys and girls team at the playdowns, with neither moving on.

This weekend's Masters Men's Lower Mainland playdowns include plenty of Chilliwack curlers. Marshall, Glen Ford and Gerry Warwyk will fly the Chilliwack Curling Club banner, joined by Delta's Vic Miller.

Earl Werk will enter his Sabre Industrial league team of Rob Wiens, Fred Snooks and Glen Street and Hockley and Watson will team up once more, gunning for another provincial berth.

This one takes place in Mission.
