Crusaders hosting rugby ruckus

Thirteen teams form the field for the fifth annual Sasquatch Rugby Tournament, hosting by the Chilliwack Crusaders at CFB Chilliwack.

Chilliwack’s Crusaders host their fifth annual Sasquatch 10’s Rugby Tournament Saturday at CFB Chilliwack, located at 45200 Keith Wilson Road.

Thirteen teams are making the trip, including far-off crews from Banff (Alberta), Bellingham (Washington State) and Williams Lake.

For the uninitiated, rugby is a full contact sport played by two teams of fifteen players for 45 minute halves.

Tournaments can vary, and Chilliwack’s will be 10 a side with 10 minute halves. Some tournaments go seven a side with seven minute halves.

In any case, the object is to carry the ball across the opponent’s try line and touch the ball down for a five point score.

Players may also score three points by drop-kicking the ball through the uprights, and the team with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Chilliwack’s tournament begins at 9 a.m. and ends around 5 p.m.

A concession will be open for fans, with plenty of food and refreshments available. Bring a non-perishable food item for the Chilliwack Food Bank and you will receive a free cob of corn.

The Crusaders currently field a team in the third division of the BC Rugby Union. The team holds no-contact summer practises from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday nights at Tyson elementary school.

The Crusaders will begin full contact practises Aug. 21 at CFB Chilliwack in prep for the fall season.
