Chilliwack’s Kelly Jones will curl in the 2018 B.C. Senior Championships, which run Feb. 20-25 at the Enderby Curling Club.
Jones survived a six-team Lower Mainland playdown last weekend at the Coquitlam Curling Club.
The skip was joined by fellow Chilliwackians Debbie McKinney (third) and Rosalee Floyd (second) and Hope natives Pattie Desjardins and Natalie Lowe.
Jones started with a 5-4 win over Richmond/Vancouver’s Yadranka Thompson, but bowed out of the A event in her next match.
She led Royal City/Cloverdale’s Shiella Cowan 7-5 through seven ends, but Cowan scored two in the eighth and one in the ninth to escape with an 8-7 win.
Moved into the B bracket, Jones bombed Delta’s Lynda Roemer 6-2.
That set up a matchup with another Chilliwack rink as she clashed with Lisa Deputan. Jones had it well in hand with a 7-3 lead through seven ends, and survived a late charge from Deputan, who scored three in the eighth to make it close.
It was just a heartbreaking tournament for Deputan, who was joined by Chilliwack’s Kerri Miller (third) and Aldergrove natives Donna Christian (second) and Ann Knopp (lead).
Earlier in the day she appeared in the A final, where a win would have sent her on to provincials.
But her team fell 7-2 to Cowan and never recovered.
Deputan’s championship chase came to an end in the C bracket with another tough loss, as Thompson scored two in the eighth end to salvage a 6-5 win.
— Doug Marshall had a tough time in the Lower Mainland senior mens’ playdown, failing to pick up one of four qualifer spots from a 10 team field.
Marshall was joined by Kevin Britz (third), Ken Britz (second) and Darren Jarvis (lead).
They started strong with a 7-1 thumping of Delta Thistle’s Alan Roemer rink.
But that was followed by three straight losses that eliminated them from contention.
