Janet Klebe capped off a dominant run at the 2019 B.C. Masters Women’s Curling Championship with a dominant win over Carol McFadden, clinching a provincial title and a berth to nationals.
Joined by Kerri Miller (third), Jane Adam (second) and Laurie Shimizu (lead), Klebe stomped McFadden’s Cloverdale/Royal City rink, rolling to a 9-1 win at the Nanaimo Curling Club.
Klebe need only four ends to win the championship, scoring four in the first, three in the second and two in the fourth for the runaway win.
“Everyone curled very well today. We just made everything and made it tough for them,” Klebe told the Nanaimo News Bulletin. “We just played our style of game and made them chase us. It worked out well for us.”
Klebe outscored her opposition by a combined 84-23 during the six day tournament, posting an overall record of 9-1.
The Chilliwackian set the tone in her opening match with a 14-2 triumph over an overmatched Marine Devlin rink from Castlegar/Beaver Valley.
She dispatched Marg Obee (Nanaimo) 10-1, Amber Dufour (Comox) 9-2, Karen Lepine (Cloverdale/Langley/Royal City/Marpole) 10-2 and Lorraine Jeffries (Nanaimo) 10-3 before suffering her only loss.
The Carol Tromans Nanaimo rink upset her 5-3, but she finished round-robin play with an 8-0 win over McFadden, 6-3 win over Royal City’s Isobel Gardner and 5-4 defeat of Laura Rampton (Marpole/Royal City).
Klebe’s crew has qualified for nationals, which take place April 1-7 at the Nutana Curling Club in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Klebe curled in nationals two years ago, finishing third, and she looks forward to a second chance.
“And we were right in there with everybody, so we’re hoping to have some good competition and some good games again, and lots of fun,” she said.
