The Chilliwack Chiefs started the new year with a loss to the Cowichan Valley Capitals while on the road in Duncan on Jan. 5.

Parker Murray scored Chilliwack’s first goal midway through the first period. It was his fourth of the season.

The Capitals found themselves down by one after a hard-fought first period but the defences of both teams kept any scoring off the board entirely in the second.

Cowichan wasted no time kickstarting the comeback in the third as Luke Santilli scored less than 90 seconds after the whistle began to start the final frame.

Less than a minute after Santilli tied it up, Mattéo Lamoureau potted his seventh of the campaign to give the home team the lead.

A powerplay goal from Brock Cummings put the Capitals up 3-1 before Chilliwack scored two more goals in roughly three minutes.

In the third period a short-handed goal from Brad Milburn, his ninth of the season, was followed not long after by a a Ty Campbell goal, his first of the year. The Campbell goal tied it at 3-3 with about 12 minutes left to play.

Cummings went on to score two more goals, achieving both the natural hattrick for himself and a 5-3 victory for his team in front of nearly 1,300 fans at the Cowichan Arena.

Next up, the Chiefs take on the Victoria Grizzlies Jan. 6 at The Q Centre Arena. Puck drop is at 6 p.m.
