BCHL extra: BCHL brothers reach for the Stars

BCHL grads Jamie and Jordan Benn are teammates for the National Hockey League's Dallas Stars.

From BCHL media:

Brothers with BCHL roots have made it to the NHL before. But last Tuesday, Jamie and Jordie Benn became the first to appear in the league as teammates as they both suited up for the Dallas Stars.

Jordie, who is 24 and two years older than Jamie, made his big league debut against Detroit in a game Dallas lost 5-4.

Both Benn brothers assisted on the first Stars goal, scored by Loui Eriksson.

“Obviously you want to win, but I got to play in the NHL with my brother so it was awesome,” said Jordie to a scrum of media members after the game.

Jamie is in his third NHL season, and with a few more NHL paycheques under his belt, he footed the bill to have their parents fly in for the game.

“As soon as I got the call, my brother flew them in so it’s kind of nice to the family here,” said Jordie.

During the 2006-07 season, the Benns were teammates with the Victoria Grizzlies before Jamie was drafted by Dallas and headed to the Western Hockey League’s Kelowna Rockets. Jordie was never drafted but signed with the Stars organization after spending time with the ECHL’s Victoria Salmon Kings and the CHL’s Allen Americans.

The last BCHL brother tandem to make the NHL was the Kariya brothers, Paul and Steve.

The last pair of brothers to play together for Dallas was Derian and Kevin Hatcher in the 1995-96 season.
