One of Abbotsford’s prized baseball facilities is now almost completely underwater after a combination of heavy rainfall and flooding seeped into DeLair Park on Monday (Nov. 15) evening into Tuesday (Nov. 16).
That field is known as the home of the Abbotsford Cardinals, a successful franchise in the British Columbia Premier Baseball League - a high performance league for 14 to 18U baseball.
The facility is also home to the Yale Baseball Academy and 9 Innings Baseball - a local business that provides baseball training to youth aged six to 13.
Everything all three of those groups built over many years has now literally washed away due to the flooding.
Earlier today the Cardinals launched a GoFundMe to try to ease the sting of these losses. According to the fundraiser, the team is out over $100,000 due to damaged turf, cages and equipment. The club will now have to purchase new turf, pitching machines, batting cages, pitching mounds, baseballs, protective screens and nets, and other related items.
The GoFundMe has a goal of $85,000 and has currently raised $3,650.
