Wayne Russell Hill

June 1, 2018
It is with profound sadness that the family of Wayne Russell Hill announce his passing on June 1st, 2018 at the age of 67.

Wayne was born in Chilliwack in 1950 to Lawrence and Phyllis Hill, where his love of farming and his deep fondness and appreciation for Chilliwack first began.

He was a hard working man, a Hill family trait, first working as a concrete finisher, (also a family trait) before joining the District of Chilliwack, all the while running the dairy farm he and his wife Gerda shared. Many of the 35 years he was employed at “The City” were spent working alongside his friend and Brother-in-Law, Greg. Wayne shared a special bond with all of his Brothers and Sisters in Laws—they were truly an extension of family to him.

Wayne took great pride in his cows and knew each of their names and even those of his Brother and Sister and their family’s herd who farmed right next door! It became his passion to breed and raise superior Holsteins and sold ‘specimens’ internationally with much success. He was the proud owner of “Tiger” his PNE Prize Cow winner. She was always his favorite, even before her big win, and was treated a little bit better than the rest of the herd, who had no complaints, I’m sure!

Wayne was also passionate about cars, his 1955 Chevy in particular. He came to love the horses that shared the farm and spent many great times watching his daughter Stacey with pride at horse shows, enjoying socializing with all of the wonderful people they met along the way. He loved his family, his friends, and his farm and valued life’s simple pleasures. He was a great listener and an equally great advice giver. He has thankfully left us with so many “Wayne- ism’s” that we will remember in the days and years to come as we struggle to move forward without him.

Wayne was predeceased by his Father Lawrence in 1966 and his Mother Phyllis in 1970. Lovingly remembered by his wife of 46 years, Gerda, his son Craig (Sonya) daughter Stacey, grandson Cohen, brothers Gary (Sandra), Bruce (Carol), Jeff (Lorie), sisters Karen (Stan), Marilyn (Greg) and many nieces and nephews.

Wayne’s family would like to thank the Doctors, Nurses and support staff at Chilliwack General Hospital, Abbotsford Cancer Center and Royal Columbian Hospital, with many thanks to Dr. Basson, Dr. Wilson and Dr. Peterson for their kindness and care with special thanks to Dr. Randy Sorum for his guidance and support.

There is so much more to his story and that of his family’s rich history full of some of Chilliwack’s Pioneers, than can be summed up into newsprint. We will love and miss the self-proclaimed “Camp River Kid” forever and will see him all around the beautiful land he so loved and in the faces of those left to carry on his legacy.

Please join us for a Celebration of Life for Wayne Russell Hill that will take place on Tuesday July 17th at the Camp River Hall at 4 pm.
