July 14, 1923 - September 18, 2021
Walter, a WWII veteran, and long-time resident of Chilliwack, passed away peacefully on September 18, 2021. He was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on July 14, 1923.
Walter received the French Legion of Honour Medal for his service with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles, 1st Battalion, landing on the beaches of Juno Beach, Normandy in the first wave on D-Day, June 6, 1944. Walter believed in living a good life in the memory of his friends and all who lost their lives during the war.
After the war, he married his sweetheart Lyla. Together, they enjoyed camping with friends, RV travelling throughout Canada and the US, taking their grandchildren on many adventures.
He was a carpenter by trade and a superintendent for 27 years before retiring. Walter was a lifetime member of the Legion and served as president of the Richmond Branch for several years. He devoted much of his time to the Legion, campaigned for the Poppy Fund well into his 90's, spoke to school children about his experiences and proudly marched in the Legion Colour Party.
Walter enjoyed life, amassed many true friends, loved the role of grampa, brother, friend, and uncle Walter.
Walter was predeceased by Lyla, his wife of 72 years, his daughter Brenda, and 5 brothers and 1 sister. His legacy will live on in the hearts of his grandchildren, Vicki (Jamie), Jesse (Jolene), Josh (Rebeka), great-grandchildren, Brandon, Brianna, Jordan, Lucas, Phoebe, Joshua and Eden, his sister Margaret and extended family.
Our sincere appreciation goes to Dr. Salter and the staff at Cascades for becoming his family when we could not be there due to Covid 19.
Grampa did not want a large service. A small family interment service will be held at a later date. Those wishing to honour his life can donate to the Chilliwack Hospice Society or the Legion Poppy Fund, Branch 280.
