1923-2021 ~ Stefan Victor Czeck passed away peacefully on Tuesday February 9, 2021, at the fine old age of 97. Steve was born in Poland in 1923 and emigrated to the Canadian prairie in 1929. His life was characterized by strength, tenacity, authenticity, a forthright approach, loyalty to Canada and love for his family.
Steve enlisted in the Canadian Forces in 1942 and supported his anti-aircraft unit through World War II across Europe. Following the war, Steve briefly returned to civilian life before re-enlisting in the Canadian Forces Service Corps, where he enjoyed a thirty year career serving his country in Edmonton and Calgary, Churchill MB, London ON and Chilliwack, as well as serving as a UN Peacekeeper in Gaza and Lebanon.
In 1946 he married Mary Edgell, and they went on to raise their four children, Barbara (Roger Keller), Marsha (Gary Hudson), Heather (Bob Rowe) and Steven Jr. (Jennine Hooge). Steve loved and was adored by his family, eventually expanding to include his 11 grandchildren, and later 14 beloved great grandchildren.
In 1973, Steve retired from the military, and began a career with Woodward's Department Store. He enjoyed many years with Woodward's before diving into an active post-retirement life of bowling, gardening, hanging out with friends at the A&W, and golfing. Steve's connection to the military remained strong, as he went to speak about the war in school classrooms, and never missed a Remembrance Day service.
Steve is remembered with deep love by his large family, who especially treasure memories of his keen sense of humour, his enjoyment of cribbage, his quiet but deep faith, and his unwavering devotion to his family. Family holidays won't be the same without him!
