(Nov. 17, 1928 – Jan. 18, 2009)
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our husband, father and grandfather, John Lloyd Esler, after a brief battle with cancer.
Lloyd was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on November 17, 1928 and came to BC with his parents, Nathaniel and Gladys in 1949. He met Sally in 1949 and they were married in 1952 at Chilliwack United Church.
He worked for several businesses in Chilliwack including Eaton’s and Brett’s. He was the owner of the Chilliwack Sport Shop in the early 1960’s and following that was a partner in the Gulf Oil Bulk Plant. He spent his last working years with the Liquor Distribution Branch in Chilliwack and retired in 1987.
Lloyd was a member of the Chilliwack Kinsman Club and was a past president of the Chilliwack Fish and Game Club. He enjoyed sports, especially golf and curling. During the years he owned the Sport Shop, he also coached Little League.
Lloyd was a true family man and relished the time spent together on family vacations. The summer vacations spent at Shuswap Lake and the years at Thetis Island, boating and fishing, were among the happiest times of his life. After retirement, there were many winters spent at the Happy Wanderer Park in Indio, California. Lloyd loved animals, the outdoors, Big Band music and was an avid reader.
He leaves behind his wife Sally; son: Tom; daughter, Jane; granddaughter Jayme and several nieces and nephews.
He will be sadly missed.
Thanks to Dr. Basson, Mickey and Esther at the Stevenson Medical Clinic and the nurses at Chilliwack General Hospital who cared for him in his final days.
A Memorial Service will be held at Carman United Church on Thursday, January 22, 2009 at 1:00 pm. Reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the BC Guide Dog Services at 6050-44th Ave, Delta, BC V4K 3X7 or the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation, Chilliwack Chapter, for the expansion of Chilliwack Hospital.
