December 26, 1927 - October 6, 2019
We celebrate the life of our dear mom, grandma and great-grandma on her passing into the safe arms of Jesus Christ, her Lord and Saviour. Mom was born in Gull Lake, SK and moved to Chilliwack with her parents Bernard and Maria Rempel in 1945. She met and then married her lifetime love, Jacob Spenst May 20, 1950. Two very precious children, Rodney and Patricia, entered their lives and they enjoyed a wonderful life farming on Banford Road until 1977. They retired off the farm and spent time travelling in Europe, Alaska and a lot of time they would just get in their vehicle and go wherever the wind blew them. Mom was also able to travel to Taiwan to visit family and her dear neighbour and friend, Jane Tap, joined her.
Mom never slowed down and loved to have adventures. We can't begin to list all of them and each of them brings a smile and a story. Throughout her married life she volunteered at the local Chilliwack MCC Store, and was the Manager for 10 years. She adapted to any environment with grace and acceptance.
Mom lived her life as a dedicated follower of Jesus and serviced the Lord on a daily basis, touching many people's lives along the way. Once her children started school, she attended every event and volunteered on a regular basis. She was also able to do the same for all of her five grandchildren, when we weren't able to be there. Grandma Spenst was loved in both McCammon and Vedder Elementary Schools. She spent 40 years volunteering in Chilliwack School District 33.
Her biggest joy was her family and felt very blessed that we are a close family, as well as all living in the Chilliwack area. She enjoyed huge family gatherings, watching children run all over and chatter non-stop about anything and everything.
Hilda was predeceased by her husband Jacob in 2005, her great-grandson Theo in 2010 and her son Rodney in 2013. Mom is survived by her daughter Patricia (Rudy) Loewen and daughter-in-law Alicia Spenst; 5 grandchildren: Andrea (Bob) Jones, Lisa (Tina) Spenst, Daniel (Dina) Spenst, Mathew (Theresa) Loewen and Andrew Loewen; and 11 great-grandchildren: Danina, Chance, Silas, Jadeyn, Xander, Brooklyn, Kayleen, Allison, Ethan, Meliah and Calex, as well as honorary daughter, Rae McRobert.
A celebration of mom's life will be held on October 16, 2019, 1 pm at the Eden Mennonite Church, Chilliwack. In lieu of flowers, donations made to the MCC are gratefully accepted.
