On Tuesday, December 19, 2006 Helen passed away after a short battle with cancer. Helen was born in Baruka Barwaldi, Ukraine. During WW2 when the Germans were retreating she fled the Ukraine with her family. They ended up in Munich, Germany where in 1947 she was engaged to Jake whom she met in a displaced persons camp. After the flood of 1948, Jake and Helen were the first to be married in the First Mennonite Church in Greendale. Some of Helens’ interests were gardening, sewing, and quilting. She was a very hospitable woman and will be remembered for feeding anyone who showed up at her house.
