Last month’s atmospheric river caused a creek in Cultus Lake Provincial Park to burst its banks leading to widespread damage to a popular beach-front area.
After the flooding and landslides that caused so much damage and destruction, much of the day-use area at Maple Bay Campground was left with as much as a metre of gravel and sand covering everything.
Watt Creek burst its banks completely covering the interpretive trail along the waterway. Picnic tables were nearly completely covered and the forest floor, grass and beach sand couldn’t be seen at all.
“There are a number of sites within Cultus Lake Park that have received damage from erosion and debris flows,” a Ministry of Environment spokesperson told The Progress Tuesday. “These include washed out access roads and sites within our campgrounds, and a debris flow event in one of our day-use areas.”
Emergency work has been done by BC Parks staff and contractors to minimize ongoing damage associated with the storm events. The spokesperson said they are undertaking assessments of the damage, gathering information and planning for recovery from the impacts.
As for how long will the work will take?
“It’s too early to say. We are still gathering information regarding the extent of the damage. We’ll have a better idea of how long the work will take after we gain a more fulsome understanding of the work required.”
