A submerged vehicle in a ditch near Chilliwack River Road and Prairie Central Road early Wednesday was reported stolen the previous night, police say.

No one was found in the vehicle when Chilliwack RCMP and firefighters rushed to the scene at about 8:50 a.m.

But an RCMP dive team was called in to check the surrounding waters, just in case, Sgt. Stewart Falebrinza said.

“They combed the whole area to make sure nobody was in the water,” he said.

Police are asking anyone who saw a dripping-wet person walking in the area, or who has information about the incident, to call the detachment at 604-792-4611.

Skid marks in the area indicated the vehicle was traveling at speed sometime Tuesday night, and the driver failed to negotiate the curve and ended up in the ditch.

Area residents called police in the morning when they saw the vehicle sunk in the dirty ditch water up to its roofline.
