How do you raise thousands of dollars for one person's cancer treatment?
One empty at a time.
Chilliwack residents showed up to a bottle drive in full force on Saturday, offering up tens of thousands of recyclable empties. They brought in water bottles, beer cans, pop containers, and juice boxes galore, all to help Lorraine Moysir pay for her chemotherapy to fight cervical cancer.
In total, organizers were able to collect $5,306 toward their $30,000 goal.
The bottle drive was supported by the Bottle Depot on Tretheway, who provided guidance and the large bins and pallets necessary for such an endeavor. The bottle drive ran all day, and organizers were at times overwhelmed with the generosity of the community. Dozens of people helped sort and organize the donations.
For those who missed the chance to donate to help Moysir, her friends have several more fundraisers planned.
On Sept. 17, there will be a Fit for a Cause Zumba event at Spencer Studios at 45905 Hocking Ave. The suggested minimum donation for the class is $10, and there are classes at 8:30 a.m., 9:15 a.m., 10 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. There are classes designed for every and all age and ability.
There will be a Ladies Night learning some hip hop dance moves with plenty of sass, on Sept. 23 at Spencer Studios. Tickets are $30 and participants must be 19.
Burgers with Purpose will be held at Triple Play Pub on Sept. 24, from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 each.
Finally, Party for a Cause at The Well at Chances is on Oct. 1. A $15 ticket gives you a $5 free play, and five raffle tickets for door prizes. There will be live entertainment, a special menu for ticket holders, a 50/50 and silent auction.
