City of Chilliwack is asking everyone to avoid non-essential travel if they can in the wake of another winter storm, with more snow and freezing rain to come.
Overnight snowfall in Chilliwack was 24.6 centimetres.
“Please avoid non-essential travel on January 6, and if you must go out, plan ahead, leave yourself extra time, and be prepared for winter conditions. Crews continue to work in two 12-hour shifts around the clock to respond to the weather,” according to the Jan. 5 city notice.
As of Wednesday afternoon, Chilliwack roads were being plowed wider to make room for more snow, trucks received tuneups, and chainsaws were being prepared in case of downed trees.
On Thursday morning, Chilliwack’s weather observer for Environment Canada, Roger Pannett, said it had been a struggle to even reach the weather station through the snow.
Overnight snowfall in Chilliwack was 24.6 centimetres with drifts up to 64 centimetres and frosty temperature -7 C, plus the wind chill, Pannett noted.
A make-up garbage collection for Jan. 6 will be on Monday, Jan. 10. Only garbage will be collected.
“Please ensure your garbage is at the curb by 7 a.m. on Jan. 10, and is accessible to crews.”
Recycling, glass, and green carts will be collected on the next collection day or bi-weekly glass/garbage collection day.
“On these days, please place any extra recycling in labelled, lidded containers, and extra green waste in yard waste bags.”
The Parr Road Green Depot is closed Jan. 6.
