Prolific offender faces charges after early-morning chase

Popkum native Shawn Gordon Stephan led local police on a half-hour chase before his arrest outside an abandoned mobile home.

Chilliwack RCMP nabbed a prolific offender in the early hours of March 27, arresting Shaun Gordon Stephan at an abandoned mobile home on Popkum Road.

The 33-year-old's driving skills got him noticed by police, who saw his vehicle weaving about erratically around 2 a.m.

An officer with the Integrated Police Dog Service tried to get Stephan to pull over, but he fled.

Minutes later, another officer spotted and tried to stop Stephan on Yale Road, but the Popkum resident kept on going.

At 2:25 a.m., a third officer found him and his vehicle parked outside the mobile home, where he was arrested.

Stephan now faces several charges including flight from a peace officer, possession of a break-in instrument and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

He appeared in court Tuesday.

"This was a great team effort from all of the members on the road," said Corporal Tammy Hollingsworth. "Reducing violent and property crime are RCMP Divisional priorities and targeting prolific offenders to reduce crime in our community will continue to be a priority."
