Chilliwack Fire officials are putting out a gentle reminder about the importance of using portable heaters properly after seeing a spike in Chilliwack structure fires recently.

“In the past week Chilliwack Fire Department has responded to structure fires on Wellington Avenue, Old Yale Road, Prest Road, and McNaught Road — all related to the use of portable heaters,” according to the news release.

“Fortunately there were no firefighter or civilian injuries or deaths at these incidents.”

Chilliwack Fire Department officials are reminding members of the public to:

• Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations when using, installing, and caring for portable heaters;

• Never leave portable heaters unattended with children and livestock;

• Always ensure manufacturer’s recommended clearances are maintained between portable heaters and any combustible materials;

• Always check on heaters and surroundings frequently to ensure they are not posing a fire hazard.
