Police and fire inspectors are probing the cause of a fire in a Surrey house where a man’s body was found Sunday evening (May 12).

Surrey fire crews were called to the 5700-block of 128 Street at around 9:40 p.m., after the RCMP received a report of a residential structure fire.

Occupants of the residence had already evacuated except for the one person who lived in a secondary suite, according to Surrey RCMP.

Surrey Fire located the body of a man in the suite, but the person’s identity has not been confirmed. “No additional information regarding the victim is being shared,” police said in a news release Monday.

The BC Coroners Service has been called to investigate circumstances of the man’s death.

“Surrey RCMP General Investigation Unit (GIU), working with a Fire Inspector from Surrey Fire Services, are investigating to determine the circumstances and cause of the fire; however, at this time the fire is not believed to be suspicious,” the RCMP say.

Anyone who witnessed the residential fire or have any additional information can call police (604-599-0502, quote file 24-67448).
