UPDATE: IHIT investigating fatal shooting in Chilliwack

Police believe killing of 28-year-old Cody Isaacson was ‘targeted’

One man is dead after an early morning shooting at a known drug house in Chilliwack Wednesday.

The RCMP’s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) was on the scene Jan. 31 at a bright yellow house on the corner of Broadway Avenue and Cedar Avenue.

Police tape had a stretch of Broadway taped off for most of the day as officers investigated the first homicide of the year.

Soon after the shooting, The Progress learned the victim was 28-year-old Cody Isaacson. At a press conference at the scene Wednesday afternoon, IHIT spokesperson Cpl. Frank Jang confirmed Isaacson was the victim, a person known to Chilliwack RCMP although someone with no recent or local criminal convictions, according to Court Services Online.

A number of friends posted rest-in-peace messages on Issacson’s Facebook page just hours after the incident, and Isaacson’s father posted a brief message, which received an outpouring of condolences: “My son Cody was shot and killed this morning.”

Neighbours reported hearing between six to eight shots at approximately 6 a.m. At around 8:30 a.m. some friends and family of the victim arrived on scene and were being notified by police.

One neighbour said the house in question at 9291 Broadway Ave. has been an active and notorious drug house for the last four months or so.

“They busted them a week and a half ago,” she said. “They’ve busted it a couple of times.”

She said many in the neighbourhood use a private messaging app to share information with each other and record licence plates and suspicious activity to report to police.

“We’re just trying to get these guys off our street,” she said, adding that all day long she sees people coming and going, usually on foot or on bicycles with backpacks and suitcases.

“They are exchanging goods for drugs,” she said. “I’m positive. I’ve seen TV sets… all sorts of stuff has gone on in this house.”

Late last year, Cody Isaacson’s father said Cody was the victim of a home invasion on Second Avenue. Three witnesses said at least one shot was fired in that incident that occurred on Oct. 25, 2017.

Asked to connect the October home invasion with the Jan. 31 homicide, Cpl. Jang said IHIT investigators will be working with the local RCMP Serious Crimes Unit to make connections between other incidents.

“If there have been instances where Mr. Isaacson was involved in any home invasion or anything like that, we are going to learn about it,” he said.

Jang said IHIT detectives are going door-to-door in the neighbourhood looking for witnesses and anyone with information should call the IHIT tip line is 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or email ihittipline@rcmp-grc-gc.ca.
