Homicide team rules death in Abbotsford car fire as ‘non-suspicious’

Autopsy complete following incident Sunday morning on Riverside Street

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has concluded that there are no suspicious circumstances involving the discovery of human remains in a car fire in Abbotsford early Sunday morning (Dec. 5).

“An autopsy was completed and the cause of death at this time is determined to be non-suspicious,” IHIT said in a press release Wednesday morning (Dec. 8).

The agency said a “detailed investigation” was completed by homicide investigators assisted by the Abbotsford Police Department’s major crime detectives and forensic identification section, as well as the BC Coroners Service.

First responders were called to the car fire at 2:42 a.m. Sunday in the 5000 block of Riverside Street.

After firefighters put out the blaze, human remains were found in the vehicle, and the road was blocked off between Hallert and Townshipline roads.

IHIT was called in and began leading the investigation on Monday after APD officers believes that the death was suspicious.

No further details have been released, including the age and gender of the deceased individual.
