Grave robbers can't get into cement-encased coffin

Chilliwack RCMP are trying to track down one or more would-be thieves who tried to rob a grave in a rural cemetery.

Chilliwack RCMP are asking for public help to find thieves involved in a disturbing grave-robbing incident at a Chilliwack cemetery.

Family visiting a grave April 20 found the plot partially dug up. The would-be thieves weren't able to access the coffin, which was encased in cement. They may have left in a hurry, abandoning several shovels at the scene.

The deceased was buried there 20 years ago, along with some family heirlooms, including jewelry. Police believe the grave was dug up well before the family discovered it.

This is a disturbing occurrence,” said RCMP Cpl. Len vanNieuwenhuizen. “We are taking this very seriously, but the cemetery is in a rural and remote area so we are asking the assistance of the general public in solving this.”

Anyone who may have info is asked to call the Chilliwack RCMP at 604-792-4611 or Crime Stoppers (anonymously) at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
