Chilliwack RCMP are looking for a 'Good Samaritan' who helped arrest a fleeing shoplifter last week.

"We are hoping the Good Samaritan will contact us so we can thank him and get further details from him," RCMP Cpl. Tammy Hollingsworth said.

Just after 9 a.m. on Feb. 2 a 32-year-old Chilliwack woman allegedly stole more than $425 worth of merchandise from the Source For Sports on Young Road.

The store clerk witnessed the theft and chased after the woman, both of them falling to the ground after grappling in the street.

But the shoplifter regained her feet and took off running again.

A motorist who happened by got out of his vehicle and chased after the woman, and held her until two off-duty police officers made the arrest.

"Unfortunately, the man who stopped to help the clerk left before the police had the opportunity to speak with him," Hollingsworth said.

Although police don't recommend civilians try apprehending shoplifters, "we are thankful in this case there were no injuries, the property was recovered, and the person responsible was arrested," she said.
