More rapid flashing beacons will be illuminating pedestrians in crosswalks in 2020.

The pedestrian-activated ‘Rapid Rectangular Flashing Beacon’ (RRFB) devices attract drivers’ attention due to the flashing lights.

City of Chilliwack has announced four crosswalk locations where the RRFB installations and road work will be undertaken this spring:

• Bernard at Crescent

• Menzies at Portage

• Keith Wilson at Lindys

• Keith Wilson at Janis.

The traffic safety devices, known to engineers as “pedestrian actuated conspicuity enhancements” are becoming more common. Construction work on the four projects, including installation, road-marking and concrete/asphalt, will be underway February to April of 2020, with more installations coming.

More details on transportation-related construction projects can be found here.

Slated to get RRFBs later in 2020:

• Knight at Luckakuck Creek

• Wellington at Hamilton

• Tyson at Cumberland

The intersection of Evans and Wells Roads will see full traffic signalization later this year.

Being considered for future crosswalk improvements:

• Thomas at Clover

• Bernard at Edwards

• Teskey Way at Jinkerson
