First degree murder charge laid in Yarrow woman’s death

A 19-year-old man was scheduled to be in Chilliwack court Monday facing a murder charge following the death of a woman in Yarrow two weeks ago.

Clayton Jacob Warkentin has been charged with first degree murder in the death of the 51-year-old woman, the Integrated Homicide Investigative Team (IHIT) announced Sunday morning.

Warkentin was arrested without incident Friday evening, police said.

The victim and suspect are known to each other, an IHIT spokespers said.  The incidents leading up to this homicide appear to be domestic related however as this matter is now before the courts no further information will be released.

“Public safety was paramount in this investigation.  This is a situation where investigators working in partnership with UFVRD RCMP were able to put the pieces together and in just over one week obtain the grounds to make an arrest. “says Sgt. Stephanie Ashton.

Police had been called the home to check on the well-being of a woman living in the 42000 block of Yarrow Central Road during the early hours of Feb. 24.

An officer arrived and found her dead.
