The Chilliwack Fire Department responded to a massive house fire downtown on Robson Street Saturday afternoon.

Flames were seen coming out of the windows and front door, and heavy black smoke was billowing from the two-storey house when the fire department arrived on-scene at about 1:40 p.m. at the corner of Robson and Victoria Avenue.

No one was home at the time. A woman who lives at the house arrived about half an hour after the emergency personnel.

Fire crews were able to successfully rescue the dog from the house and assisted B.C. Ambulance crews with providing the dog with oxygen and water. There were reports that a second dog also made it out of the fire alive.

Flames were still visible through the roof of the house an hour after firefighters started battling the blaze. Nearly two hours after the fire was called in, the fire department reported the fire had been extinguished.

Fire crews from Halls 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 responded. No firefighter injuries were reported.

The cause of this fire is under investigation by fire department officials and is believed to be accidental.

The Chilliwack Salvation Army responded to the scene and provided drinking water and nourishment to fire crews.

Note: An earlier version of this story erroneously reported the woman was at work at the time of the fire. The Progress later learned she was not.
