Fraser River erosion protection near Chilliwack’s East Dike will see stabilization of the banks with large riprap.

Timbro Contracting was awarded the 2022 contract for phase two of the Fraser River Erosion Protection project by City of Chilliwack.

“The East Dike near the project site is critical infrastructure that provides flood protection to the majority of the Chilliwack floodplain,” according to the staff report Dec. 7. “The Fraser River bank erosion protection will increase the stability of adjacent diking, located roughly within 15 metres of the eroding river bank. By stabilizing the bank, the diking will offer a higher level of protection to the community.”

Timbro’s submission of $874,681 was the lowest of 11 bids on the project, which went as high as $1.7 million.

Riprap upgrades to increase river bank protection started in 2014, along the south bank of the Fraser River downstream of the Camp Hope intake. It continued with phase 1 in 2019, after city officials secured funding and now phase two is planned for 2022.

Funding for phase two was allocated from the city’s approved 2022 financial plan for this project funded by the ‘community emergency preparedness fund’ and the ‘dike upgrades’ budget.
