A barn in Ryder Lake that was being used for storage was destroyed by fire early Thursday (Dec. 16).

Residents who were awakened by the fire quickly called 911, according to a release from the Chilliwack Fire Department.

A total of 30 firefighters from Chilliwack firehalls 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 responded to the call in the 47000-block of Extrom Road.

“Fire crews arrived on scene to find a fully involved barn fire. Fire crews quickly went defensive, secured a water supply and quickly extinguished the fire, keeping the heat and smoke to the barn structure,” according to assistant fire chief Mike Bourdon.

“Fortunately, there were no animals in the barn as the structure was used for storage.”

The barn was completely destroyed, according to fire officials, but there were no civilian or firefighter injuries.

“The fire appears to be accidental at this time.”
