After less than three years as Mission’s deputy chief administrative officer, Paul Gipps is taking the helm at the Fraser Valley Regional District.
Gipps will begin his new job as chief administrative officer on May 6.
“A great opportunity came up to work in the Fraser Valley Regional District in a role that I’ve done before and want to get back to,” said Gipps, adding he has learned a lot during his years in Mission. “I’ve enjoyed my time in Mission.”
Gipps noted the district has a dedicated staff and the citizens have treated him well during his stay.
As Gipps tries to wind down his work here, he will be picking up issues the FVRD is facing.
“The regional district, like all local governments, is faced with an increased cost for service and trying to reduce the impact to taxpayers,” said Gipps.
He has more than 22 years of local government experience and held the title as CAO in the District of Houston and the Town of Gibsons before coming to Mission.
Gipps grew up in Kemano, a small town south of Kitimat and embraced outdoor living at a young age, learning to hunt and fish.
He first came to the Lower Mainland for high school because school in Kemano topped out at Grade 8, said Gipps.
After finishing high school, he worked as a journeyman carpenter for 10 years before becoming a building inspector.
In 1990, he took a job with the City of Terrace and ran that department together with bylaws, animal control and planning.
Gipps returned to school for a diploma in public administration and was promoted to deputy CAO in Terrace before becoming CAO in Houston in 2004.
