A contractor has been chosen to build the new addition on Chilliwack city hall.

Wales and McLelland Construction’s proposal in the amount of $6,589,000 was accepted by city council as a late item to the June 1 council agenda.

The need for more room at city hall was explained this way in the staff report:

“Continued economic growth has resulted in the need for additional civic services and staffing to meet the increased needs of the community.”

The 20,000-square-foot addition over three floors is expected to be able to “accommodate the need for additional staff and resources to serve the growing community,” according to the report.

City officials also purchased property on Southlands Drive to provide additional parking to offset the public parking stalls that will be lost in construction of the addition.

Wales and McLelland, n.Wallace & Company, and Preview Builders International made the short list.

“Although n.Wallace & Company provided a proposal which ranked the highest, their proposal price was significantly higher than the second-ranked proposal, and well in excess of the project budget,” the report continued.

The evaluation team weighed “the dramatic difference in price” as well as the project budget and could not substantiate a recommendation for the highest-ranked proposal.

“The proposal provided by Wales & McLelland meets the RFP (request for proposals) requirements at an affordable price and is thereby considered to be the most advantageous proposal.”
