Chilliwack school district surveys community on two-week spring break

Chilliwack school district is seeking online input from the community regarding a two-week spring break next year.

To be or not to be, that's the question Chilliwack school district wants answered with regards to a two-week spring break next year.

The school district has posted an online survey on its website for parents, students, employees and other partner groups to fill out regarding the potential change to the school calendar for the 2012-13 school year.

The survey includes three questions: Do you support a two-week spring break for next year? What are some issues that would arise for you as a result of a two-week spring break? What group do you belong to within the community?

Since the survey was posted online Tuesday morning, the district has received more than 600 responses.

The district has been looking into the feasibility of employing a two-week spring break for next year, because of it falling on the week prior to Easter long weekend, which would mean students would be back in school for four days and then off again for a long weekend.

If approved, spring break will fall between March 18 and April 1.

However, the last time the school district imposed a two-week spring break in 2010, it was met with great amounts of backlash from several groups including parents and support workers.

The online survey is on the school district's website at www.sd33.bc.ca, and will be up until April 19.

A decision will be made at the April 24 board of education meeting.
