RCMP arrested a man in connection with an apparent child abduction Tuesday morning, but Crown has since decided there's not enough evidence to proceed with a charge.
Around 11:40 a.m., police say a man entered an apartment complex in the 9400 block of Williams Street, and knocked on several doors.
A four-year-old boy answered, and the man allegedly walked into the apartment, approached the boy's caregiver and offered a handshake. When the startled caregiver refused, police say the man grabbed a toy wrestling belt, kitten and the boys hand, leading the child out of the apartment.
They got as far as the lobby before the boy put the brakes on, refusing to go any further.
The man left with the wrestling belt.
Chilliwack RCMP searched the area, with one officer checking security video from a local business to get a description and direction of travel.
Eventually, they found him.
A 41-year-old Chilliwack native was arrested and appeared in Chilliwack court Tuesday on a charge of attempted abduction of a person under 14. Though that charge has now been withdrawn, he remains in custody, awaiting a July 15 court appearance for a Peace Bond application.
That is the criminal code version of a restraining order.
