A single vehicle accident at the intersection of Evans Road and Luckakuck Way forced the closure of Luckakuck Way for several hours Thursday.
Cpl. Len vanNieuwenhuizen said a car was travelling northbound on Evans Road approaching the overpass when, for reasons unknown, it jumped the foot-and-a-half tall cement median and crossed both southbound lanes.
"It struck a light standard where the eastbound onramp enters the overpass," he explained. "Then, it went airborn over Luckakuck, collided with the cement retaining wall and fell onto Luckakuck."
East and westbound traffic on the usually-busy road was shut down until mid-afternoon while the Lower Mainland District Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service investigated.
Meanwhile, the Evans Road roundabout and overpass remained open, with southbound traffic cut to one lane.
Highway No. 1 was not affected.
The lone person in the car was airlifted to Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster.
