It was a final month to remember for the Sardis Fliers Speed Skating Club, closing out their 2023-24 season on a high.

The club’s season culminated with three skaters standing on the podium between the BC Short Track Provincials and the Washington State Open Short Track Championships.

The efforts were led by 12-year-old Alexandra Mueller, who battled her way to a second-place finish in her division at the short-track provincials.

For a second time in the calendar year, Mueller earned the honour to represent Team BC – this time in short-track competition – at the Canada West Speed Skating Championships in Medicine Hat, AB.

Mueller gained valuable experience competing against some of the best speed skaters in all of western Canada finishing an admirable eighth place.

From there, Mueller headed south of the border to Tacoma for the state’s short-track championship, where she was pitted against the best 12- to 14-year-olds in the state, including Team USA youth Olympian, Marley Soldan. Mueller ended her season with a bang, winning gold in her division.

The Fliers’ most senior competitive speed skater, Carter Rae, topped off a highly successful season with a gold medal finish of his own in Washington for the junior division.

Rae also qualified for the BC Short Track Provincials finishing ninth place among 16- to 18-year-olds.

Fittingly, Rae was awarded the Most Improved Skater honours in his division for the Fraser Valley Series 2023-2024.

Felix Dennill was Sardis’ youngest skater at the Washington event this year. Despite skating different distances there, Felix found himself atop the podium, taking home gold in the novice division.

Dennill also finished third in voting for the Most Improved Skater in the children’s division of the Fraser Valley Series for 2023-24.

While many Fliers were representing the province in Tacoma, two Sardis skaters were finding their own success at the FUNale event in Kelowna. The BCSSA FUNale combines race-level competition with fun for many intermediate-level skaters. Six-year-old Alexander Meinen won bronze in the children’s division, while 12-year-old Rebeka Meinen also took home bronze in the youth division.
