RCMP investigators were on the scene of a suspicious trailer fire that erupted pre-dawn Thursday morning at Island 22 Regional Park in Chilliwack.

Chilliwack RCMP and Chilliwack Fire Department were dispatched at about 1:30 a.m. to the fire in the homeless encampment where several trailers are parked, outside the gate to Island 22 in the 45900-block of Cartmell Road in Chilliwack.

Firefighters responded to the early morning call from Halls 1, 2, 4 and 6 and upon arrival, found a recreational travel trailer fully engulfed in flames.

Crews quickly began an offensive attack while securing a water supply to bring the blaze under control.

“Firefighters effectively contained and extinguished the fire, confining it to the unit of origin, which suffered significant fire damage,” said assistant fire chief Andy Brown.

RCMP and Chilliwack Fire Department are conducting investigations.

There were no injuries reported.

“RCMP are investigating this as a suspicious fire, and fire investigators from Chilliwack RCMP Serious Crime Unit are currently on-scene,” said Sgt. Krista Vrolyk spokesperson for Chilliwack RCMP.

Anyone with information can call the non-emergency number of RCMP at 604-792-4611 or to remain anonymous call CrimeStoppers.
