Chilliwack Progress and journalist Jenna Hauck celebrated at industry awards

Newspaper earns gold for general excellence; Hauck earns silver for local arts story

The Chilliwack Progress and its longtime multimedia journalist Jenna Hauck were both recognized by the B.C. and Yukon Community Newspaper Association over the weekend.

The newspaper received gold for general excellence in its circulation category, while Hauck received silver for arts and culture writing.

Her story featured Chilliwack’s Anne Schaefer, who has made around 1,000 quilts which have all been donated to charity.

General excellence awards take into account a number of aspects of the newspaper, including front page design, advertising content, photography, layout and community coverage.

The awards ceremony was held at the Polygon Gallery in North Vancouver, and attended by media professionals from across the B.C. and Yukon. on April 20.

The awards are also referred to as the Ma Murrays, and are named for Margaret “Ma” Murray, a Canadian newspaper editor, publisher and columnist who was invested as an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1971.

Murray built a legendary reputation running newspapers in British Columbia’s northeast with a spicy wit, rural wisdom and strong opinions. Her editorials were often signed off with the phrase “And that’s fer damshur!”

The awards’ 45 categories cover all aspects of the newspaper industry, recognizing excellence in production, publishing, reporting, editing, advertising, photography, website design, community contribution by community news organizations, and lifetime achievement throughout British Columbia and Yukon.
