Chilliwack Community Services and Chilliwack Learning Society are receiving provincial government money to help with local literacy. Funds from the Community Adult Literacy Program are directed to organizations that help people improve their skills in reading, writing, math, and digital literacy.

Chilliwack Community Services runs its Pathways to Learning program while Chilliwack Learning Society offers Adult Learning Services. Those two programs join 100 others province wide sharing in $3.4 million. Recipients are community-based, adult, family, and Indigenous literacy programs helping people gain skills in basic literacy, numeracy, life skills, and employment preparation. Programs are delivered by trained volunteers and include one-on-one-tutoring and small-group classes.

“Our government makes it a priority to help fund adult literacy programs so that all British Columbians can thrive in our society,” said Chilliwack MLA Dan Coulter. “I’m grateful to the folks at Chilliwack Community Services and the Chilliwack Learning Society for the work they continue to do for people in our community.”

Money is flowing into 102 programs in 132 communities this year. In 2022 funding was provided for 97 programs in 128 communities.

“Literacy effects so many aspects of our lives at every age and is key in making sure people can access services, education, and jobs to help them thrive in British Columbia,”said Chilliwack-Kent MLA Kelli Paddon. “Thanks to this funding, more adults across the region will be able to strengthen their literacy skills and pursue new opportunities.”
