Á’a:líya Warbus was named the Chilliwack-Cultus Lake candidate for Conservative Party of BC on March 1.

Warbus was born and raised in Stó:lō territory, and has deep family roots in politics and activism.

“I’m running with the Conservatives because John (Rustad) will end broken NDP policies like the so- called “safe-supply” of opioids. Instead of fighting for prevention and rehabilitation, this Eby NDP government is pushing these addictive drugs on both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. This is a genocide of our most vulnerable — it has to end,” Warbus said.

She’s the director of cultural communications at Stó:lō Xwexwilmexw government, A Capilano professor in Indigenous Digital Film Department, as well as a filmmaker, podcast host, actor and musician.

Warbus is the daughter of former B.C. Lieutenant-Governor Steven Point, and Gwen Point, and she graduated from the University of British Columbia, with a Master of Fine Arts in film production.

“This academic journey allowed her to delve into the complexities of Indigenous identity and worldview within the context of contemporary society. This educational background has been crucial in shaping her perspectives and contributing to her expertise in the field,” according to her profile on the B.C. Conservatives page.

As a multifacted artist, her work has been showcased at film and music festivals, community events, and exhibits since 2005.

“This artistic dimension not only showcases her creativity but also serves as a powerful medium for expressing the struggles and triumphs of her people,” her profile reads.

In terms of community involvement, Warbus been actively involved in uplifting the voices of Indigenous youth. Working on the front lines, she directly engages with young individuals, amplifying their perspectives and providing support for their growth.

As a mother of three children, Warbus is personally invested in building a better future for her family and community. Her upbringing and family life have played a crucial role in shaping her commitment to Indigenous rights, cultural preservation, and community well-being.

“I’m incredibly proud that Á’a:líya is putting her name forward, as a candidate for the Conservative Party of British Columbia. Our Conservative team is united not by dogma and ideology, but rather on principles and a commitment to doing right by everyday working people — we are honoured to have Á’a:líya joining our team,” said MLA John Rustad, leader of the Conservative Party of B.C.
