The members of Chilliwack’s Royal Canadian Mounted Police are getting ready to launch December’s CounterAttack campaign, meaning they’ll be ramping up their intervention of impaired driving over the Christmas season.

“The Christmas season is a time of cheer, for parties and celebration,” said Corporal Mike Rail, spokesperson for the Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment. “Be responsible and plan a safe way to get home.”

And with holiday parties already in full swing across the city, starting Nov. 30, Operation Red Nose will be offering an option for safe post-party travel: available Fridays and Saturdays after 9:00 p.m. during the month of December, drivers can be reached at 604-393-3000.

Then on Dec. 1, in conjunction with police agencies across B.C., Chilliwack’s RCMP Traffic Service is kicking off the National Safe Driving Week (Dec. 1 - 7) with an enhanced enforcement initiative on Dec. 1, and will continue the enhanced enforcement throughout the month of December alongside the provincial CounterAttack program.

Rail also wants to remind the public that it’s not only about drinking and driving when it comes to impaired driving: it also encompasses impairment by cannabis.

But to help everyone get home safely, here are a few suggestions from the RCMP:

· Organize a designated driver program with family and friends

· Plan ahead to travel by public transit or taxi

· Stay overnight
