VIDEO: Parents invited to porn documentary screening

Chilliwack youth committee presents Over 18 doc to caregivers March 14

Online porn is a growing parental concern, with more and more youth unintentionally being exposed to images while using the internet.

To help parents, caregivers and service providers gain more awareness about the effects on online porn on young people, the Chilliwack Child and Youth Committee is holding a screening on a documentary called Over 18. The film approaches the topic through interviews with porn directors, porn stars, ex-porn stars, researchers, psychologists, as well as a 13 year-old who is overcoming a porn addiction.

Here is a preview of the film:

The film’s website lists facts for parents and caregivers to be aware of around teens and porn viewing. For example, 39 per cent of boys and 23 per cent of girls have seen sexual bondage online, and 53 per cent of boys and 39 per cent of girls who have seen porn believe it’s a realistic depiction of sex.

Many youth today are getting sexual information from degrading and violent pornography online, which are easily accessible. This is thought to be interfering with healthy development and relationships.

“We are concerned how these materials may be shaping values,” a poster by the committee says.

The screening is being held on Wednesday, March 14 at the Chilliwack Neighbourhood Learning Centre at Chilliwack secondary school. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the screening begins at 6:30 p.m.
