Jigging, carving and storytelling all part of day of learning Métis culture

Métis dancer Fergus Dalton got people’s feet moving on Tuesday as he taught students and staff some jigging dance steps during Métis Awareness Day at UFV Chilliwack’s Gathering Place on Tuesday.

The day was aimed at teaching UFV students and staff about Métis culture, said event organizer Josephine Charlie. Middle school students from Abbotsford also attended.

Métis Awareness Day included local storytellers, plus learning how to do wood carving with Patrick Calihou, beading with Deni Paquette and finger weaving.

Charlie also made bison soup and bannock for the event.

The event leads up to Louis Riel Day which commemorates the anniversary of the execution of the Métis leader on Nov. 16, 1885 in Regina where he was hanged for treason. Nov. 16 marks one of the most significant days in the history of Métis people as Riel made the ultimate sacrifice for his people defending their rights.
